In a tale of two seasons, Corning's Pony league baseball team dropped their fourth straight game Sunday afternoon falling to 5-4 on the season.
Axtell improved their lead in the league holding a one game advantage in the loss column over Centralia. Corning went ahead early in the game after Axtell scored one run in the first. Corning countered with three runs in the bottom of the second. Alex Steinlage highlighted the inning with his second home run of the year. Mitchell Heideman drove in the other two runs with a single off the right field fence. In a game that Corning had fifteen hits, poor base running and the lack of a clutch hit left multiple runners stranded throughout the game. Corning's Cody Duryea held Axtell hitters in check allowing only two runs until the 4th inning. Duryea got the loss as Axtell scored four runs in the 4th inning to open the game up. Corning's only other run came off of a solo home run by Clyde Glissman to deep center field in the 6th inning. The final score was Axtell 8 and Coning 4. Ben Hasenkamp and Rodney Steinlage helped lead the way for Corning with two hits apiece. Corning will attempt to get back in the win column when they face Kelly Tuesday evening in Kelly.
