
It was a full slate of American Legion baseball on Wednesday as Centralia, Doniphan County, Seneca and Atchison all won league contests. Centralia improved to 6-0 in the league with a 16-4 romp at Hiawatha while Doniphan County posted a quick 10-0 win against Falls City improving to 4-1. Atchison improved to 3-4 in the league with a 6-2 win at Sabetha and Seneca rallied for a second victory in a wild 10-9 win against Holton.
At Noble Park, Hiawatha grabbed an early 4-0 lead but Centralia would score 16 unanswered including 11 times in the fifth inning to end the game by run-rule. Patrick Bramhall pitched the first four innings for the win. Centralia is now 16-5 overall while Hiawatha drops to 4-10.
In Wathena, Colin Greaser tossed a two-hit game with seven strikeouts and added two hits offensively. Travis Twombly was 3-3 with a home run and 3 batted in while Brennan Wehner and Ryan Barker each added a pair of hits. DC improved to 15-3 overall while Falls City lost their third straight game and is now 7-5.
Atchison scored four runs in the sixth inning at Somerset Park to rally past Sabetha and Brett Norris pitched a complete game allowing just three hits while striking out 11 for the win. Chris Lund had three hits for Atchison who improved to 3-4 in the league and 4-12 overall. Brock Boldra allowed six runs but only three earned after striking out nine. Christian Busch had two hits for Sabetha who fell to 10-11 overall and 2-5 in the league.
At Swisher Field, the game showcased seven pitchers and seven errors plus five lead changes before Seneca scored three times in the bottom of the seventh for their fourth win of the season. Seneca led 1-0 before Holton scored five runs in the third capped by a two-run triple from Jordan Mosely. Seneca scored twice for a 6-5 lead in the fifth and both teams traded a run in the sixth. Holton was down to their final out in the 7th before Kyle Porter capped a 5-5 game with a two-out bases clearing double to put Holton ahead 9-7. Steven Huertter was the third pitcher for Seneca and blew the save but he delivered the third of four straight hits in the bottom of the inning and became the winning pitcher when Cody Heiman came through with the winning hit with two outs. Heiman was joined by Brett Holthaus, Eric Huertter and Chris Rottinghaus with two hits each while Dylan Blevins had 3 of the 15 Seneca hits. Curt Bontrager was the fourth Holton pitcher and took the loss pitching the final frame as Holton fell to 6-8 overall and 3-4 in the league.
Thursday night the two league leaders collide as Centralia plays at Doniphan County. DC has already handed Centralia 3 of their 5 losses this year and Falls City plays at Hiawatha tonight (Thursday).
