
Eight medalists including a state champion brought home hardware to Northeast Kansas from the 2010 high school state tournaments.
Ethan Mumaw of Jeff West capped a perfect 34-0 junior campaign by taking the title at 171 pounds in Class 4A. Mumaw won the championship 5-3 against Andale's Benny Armstrong.
Two other state placers in Class 4A from Holton as Drake Lovvorn was 4th and Kane Lovvorn placed 5th. Drake went 3-2 in the 152 weight class at Salina to finish the year 38-5 while Kane won an overtime match to earn his 5th place medal and cap a 35-4 year at 130 pounds.
Four other area grapplers that notched two wins but failed to reach medal contention in Class 4A were Garrett Mathews of Royal Valley, Camron Leupold and John Denner of Hiawatha and Kenny Gulley from Atchison.
Five area wrestling brought home a medal from Class 3A led by Brett Dunlap of Doniphan West who placed second at 189 pounds. Dunlap only fell 5-3 to Omil of El Saline in the title match and finished his year 36-7.
Horton had a pair of placers as Hunter Speer went 4-0 on Saturday to get in medal contention and ended up in 3rd place with a 36-5 record on the season at 103 pounds. Kyle White of Horton lost by a point in his 3rd place match and settled for 4th with a 30-7 mark at 152 pounds this year.
Marysville also had two medallists as Skylar Goepfert won four matches to place 5th at 112 pounds and Josh Goepfert ended up sixth after a 3-3 state showing. Skylar ended up with a 30-win campaign and joined Dunlap and Mumaw as the only consecutive state finishers.
Sabetha's Brock Boldra and Michael Forbes of ACCHS each won two matches at state but failed to medal and no area teams from Northeast Kansas placed in the top 15.
