
The 2010 Kansas American Legion Baseball Zone Tournament from Sabetha was in action last night. In the first game, number one seed Seneca powered past number four seed Hiawatha 11-2.
Kyle Haverkamp gets credited with the win, pitching a complete game while only allowing one earned run, two hits, and recording seven strikeouts on 97 pitches. Haverkamp also went 2-5 scoring three runs on a double and a three-run blast in the top of the seventh earning him the Subway Player of the Game. Eric Heurter went 2-4 with three RBI including a two-run homerun in the top of the fifth. Cody Heiman also went 3-4 while scoring two runs.
For Hiawatha, Nate Deforrest gets the loss allowing eleven hits and seven earned runs on 112 pitches in 6 2/3 innings. Tanner Smith went 1-3 with one run and Gabe Noll also went 1-3. Hiawatha falls to 11-12 on the season and will face Centralia Tuesday at 6pm. As for Seneca, they move to 15-5, completing their sixth win in a row, and will be playing Sabetha Wednesday at 8pm.
After the Seneca versus Hiawatha game, number two seed Sabetha edged out a win against number three seed Doniphan County 3-1. The game was a pitcher's duel between Jerod Hawkins of Doniphan County and Riley Wells of Sabetha. They combined for 26 strikeouts. The game was tied at one apiece until Reid Bruggeman stepped up the to the plate and smashed a solo homer to lead off the fourth. Only up by 2-1 in the top of the seventh, Ross Bruggeman followed Reid's lead with a solo homerun of his own.
Wells gets the win and was the Subway Player of the Game, pitching the complete game, allowing just two singles, one earned run, with 11 strikeouts on 121 pitches. Jerod Hawkins was credited with the loss, pitching a complete game allowing four hits, two earned runs with 15 strikeouts on 100 total pitches. Hawkins and Paden Halter had Doniphan County's only two hits and both finished 1-3. Sabetha who has won four of five, moves to 20-9 and will be playing Seneca Wednesday at 8pm. Doniphan County is now 14-8 and will be playing Holton Tuesday at 8pm.

The opening game of the Zone 1AA Tournament in Sabetha was a marathon, with Hiawatha prevailing 10-9 in 11 innings.
Gabe Noll scored the winning run off a Mike Costa single with one out in the bottom of the 11th. Matt Schuman took the loss for Holton (7-16). Hiawatha is 3-0 vs. Holton this season.
Noll also pitched five innings in relief of starter Taylor Olsen and earned himself the win and honor of Subway Player of the Game. He struck out six and allowed just one baserunner, Jacob Spalding, who he hit with a pitch in the ninth.
Hiawatha (11-11) trailed 2-0 early, but scored four in the third to take the lead. Holton responded with three in the fifth, before Hiawatha came right back with four in the bottom of the inning. Hiawatha led 9-5 heading into the seventh and Holton sent eight to the plate, managing four runs on four hits to tie the game and force extra innings.
Olsen was 2-3 with two runs and a RBI. Teammate Tanner Smith was 3-5, with two runs and a RBI. Jordan Marable also had three hits for Hiawatha, who has won three straight and now plays Seneca in the second round Monday at 6PM.
Holton's Jackson Delay was 2-6 with three runs scored, while Jay Morris scored twice and also had two RBI. Holton has dropped seven of eight and plays in the losers' bracket Tuesday at 8PM.
Game two was not nearly as dramatic. Doniphan Co. defeated Centralia 13-5 in six innings.
Doniphan Co. has won six straight, while Centralia has lost eight in a row. Doniphan Co. now has a 2-1 advantage in the season series.
Doniphan Co. (14-7) scored six runs and four hits in the second inning and led 8-0 after two. Centralia (4-13) scored two in the third, one in the fourth, and two more in the fifth, but it wasn't enough and they play in the losers' bracket Tuesday at 6PM.
D.C. was led by their 3-5 hitters, Bryce Paden, Jerod Hawkins, and Elliot Nold, who were a combined 8-10 with seven runs and RBI. Hawkins had a two-run homer, but Paden was the Subway Player of the Game, going 3-3 with four runs and three RBI.
Derek Nold was the winning pitcher, tossing the first three innings and allowing just two runs on two hits, striking out five and walking three.
Cody Trimble took the loss for Centralia, throwing 129 pitches in six innings, giving up 11 hits, 13 runs, and striking out seven. He walked two and hit three batters.
Offensively for Centralia, Dylan Kramer was 1-3 with two runs and Tyler Glatczak was 2-2 with a run and RBI.
Doniphan Co. plays Sabetha in the second round after the conclusion of Seneca vs. Hiawatha Monday night.
