The Jeff West girls and Royal Valley boys were crowned 2008 Big 7 League Track Champions on Thursday in Hiawatha.
While the Lady Tigers won by 16 points over Nemaha Valley followed by Holton and Royal Valley, the Panther boys edged Holton by just four points in the team standings. The Nemaha Valley boys were third and Jeff West finished one point ahead of Hiawatha in fourth.
Individually, Melissa Nelson of Holton was a triple gold medalist in the 100, 200 and 400. Moriah Dowding of Jeff West won both hurdle races plus the long jump and Jylian Jolama from Maur Hill/Mount Academy took the 1600 and 3200. Other girls winners were Mandy Bostwick in the shot put, BriAnna Ploude in the high jump, Cheyenne Rhoads in the discus, Cortney Brown in the javelin, Brianna Christian in the triple jump, Dana Hermesch in the 800 and Keely McKernan in the pole vault.
On the boys side, Kevin Hunninghake of Nemaha Valley placed first in the 100 and 200 while Austin Coverdale of Holton won both hurdle events and Russell Frakes of Hiawatha grabbed gold in the 1600 and 3200. Other Big 7 track champs include: Derek Haverkamp in the 400, Derek Wallisch in the 800, Travis Miller in the long jump and Trevor Miller in the triple jump, Briar Ploude in the high jump, Jessie Gibbons in the pole vault, James Burns in the shot put, Ethan Hammes in the discus, and Kevin Middlemist in the javelin.
